2013 Theme “Through My Eyes”

Mental illness affects one in four people in this country, but many are uncomfortable talking about it due to stigma. The shame felt interferes with getting needed support, both for the individual impacted and their family member/s.

In response to this problem NAMI Fairfield is launching Stigma-Free CT. Starting on the local level we hope to open the dialogue about mental health care and the need for comprehensive and affordable services for all people who need them.

In recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month NAMI Fairfield is announcing its first essay contest. We hope that this will become an annual event, and that the community will take an active role and participate by submitting entries and attending the winners award celebration on June 5th.

The essay contest’s theme “Through My Eyes” encourages writers to share their individual feelings and experiences about how mental illness has affected them or touched their life. It offers an opportunity to raise understanding, nurture compassion, inspire change and end the stigma that often surrounds mental illness.
