Catchment Area Councils

Purpose

The overall purpose of the Catchment Area Councils (CACs) is to promote mental health, to prevent mental illness and addictions, and to assist the Regional Mental Health Board in each region in the establishment of a single linked system of regionalized mental health services.

The CAC undertakes various planning activities in conjunction with the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Such activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessment of the local mental health and addiction service needs
  • Documentation of the mental health and addiction service delivery system in the area
  • Review and evaluation of existing services in the area
  • Recommendation of continued, expanded, or new programs

CAC 1
Serves the towns of Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan and Stamford.

CAC 2
Serves the towns of Norwalk, Weston, Westport and Wilton

CAC 3
Serves the towns of Bridgeport (western portion), Easton and Fairfield

CAC 4
Serves the towns of Bridgeport (eastern portion), Monroe, Stratford and Trumbull

Qualifications for Membership

Members must have an interest in promoting mental health and preventing mental illness and a willingness to become actively involved in planning of mental health services.  Half of the CAC membership is made up of consumers or potential consumers of mental health and addiction services (described as “non-mental health providers”), and are appointed by the first selectman, mayor, or governing official of each town. The remaining half of the CAC membership is comprised of an equal number of representatives that are elected by the majority vote.

Membership Responsibilities

  • Attend scheduled CAC Meetings, one time per month (approximately 2 hours)
  • Actively participate in CAC Projects and/or Board Committees
  • Act as a liaison between the CAC and your Town official

Professional and administrative staff assistance and all needed materials/supplies and training will be provided by the Council for all activities undertaken in the process of carrying out this work.
